The D Word

Fish markets are not the same the world over. Used to Portuguese fish markets, Niki was sorely disappointed (the D-word!) at the lamentable attempts at fishy retailing of two fish outlets in Ballina, a coastal town south of Pearces Creek. Small, and offering limited choice, the fish displays were nowhere reminiscent of a fresh fish market (as which they had been advertised) which is surprising for a seaside area such as the Northern Rivers. I believe even Byron Bay (also a coastal town) only has one fish shop and not even a market, and yet a lot of fish is sold locally! Also, most of the fish laid out has been prepared for consumption, so no heads, tails, or anything (very unlike Portugal, too). We nevertheless managed to ´score´ some flatfish (yes, fairly flat), snapper (well no, it wasn´t snapping anymore), leather jackets (really, the skin comes off like a leather jacket!) and sea bream. A freezer full of goodies... oh, and a few heads for the cats who were treated to what they felt was a gastronomical treat...
